Peugeot Design Lab presented this amazing piece called the Onyx Sofa at the 2014 Milan Design Week:
I wanted to start off with a picture so you could get a visual before getting into details.
This project combines two unique materials, carbon fiber and volcanic stone, which meld into each other to create an organic shaped bench. Â The idea behind coming two different materials started originally with Peugeot’s Onyx concept car which utilized both copper and carbon fiber:
The Onyx Sofa started off with a giant piece of volcanic stone which was then sculpted to become the right side of the bench:
The other half of the bench is carbon fiber, which done by hand-laying the material down over a core and then clearcoating it. Â Based on the making of video at the bottom of this post, it looks like one of the most time rewarding aspects was getting the carbon fiber piece sanded down to the right amount so that it would match up to the shape of the volcanic stone.
The entire process took 70 days and the price has been set at 135,000 Euro (about $183,000 USD at the time of this writing).
Making of Video
Watching the video below really shows you everything involved in what you wouldn’t even realize required so much work. Â It also helps to justify the price tag.
