Utilizing carbon fiber on phone cases is become a larger trend, we’ve already looked at Case Mate’s carbon fiber leather iPhone 3G case.  We’ve got a couple new ones to write about, including the latest, the ION carbon fiber and leather case:

ION makes a few different technology accessories, and they’ve done a really nice job with this one.  Rather than utilizing only carbon fiber, they used it as more of an accent on the case, and mixed it with other materials such as leather and velvet (a suede-like material).  This really sets off the design nicely by having a stripe of real carbon fiber through the middle back of the case.

The carbon fiber is 100% real carbon weave composite, hand-made and fine polished in form to ensure its perfect fit.  The carbon fiber uses a hard resin gloss finish.  For anybody concerned about the carbon fiber interfering with the signal reception, ION has done lab tests that have proven there was no signal interference.

The inner case is made out of a polycarbonate inner shell with a soft interior lining for protection.  The leather is a full-grain sheep leather.  Since ION sent us a couple samples, I can sincerely vouch for the quality of the cases, they are extremely nice, and you will not be disappointed.  The cases are priced just under $80 at $79.89, and are shipped directly from ION in Hong Kong.  We’re now selling this case, and can be purchased at our CFG Direct store.  The retail price is on the high-end of an iPhone case, but using real carbon fiber helps reinforce that cost, and as I mentioned the quality is excellent.

One thing to note, which you can see in the pictures, is that a lot of the top of the case is open.  You have to keep this in mind from a protective standpoint.  The phone was an extremely tight fit into the case, so there were no concerns about it popping out of the top.  We would have liked to see a clear screen protector for the front of the phone included in the $80 price.

Overall, I think it’s a great case that will garner attention.  If you’re ready to decently protect your phone in style, look no further.  While we were sent the while leather and grey velvet, I would probably opt for the black leather.  The white leather is absolutely gorgeous, but I can see it being hard to maintain.

did you get the 3g version because i went to their website and you had the 3g version but you were using the first gen iphone? was it good?

  • arthur

i am also interested in purchasing one

  • I did have a 3G version, I had tested with both phones (the first gen seemed to fit as well)…I just happened to have only taken pics with the first gen.

    Thanks

    was the case slim?

  • I mean it wasn’t bloated….you can see how much bigger it was than the iPhone in the pictures. I’d say it was pretty good sized, although the 100% carbon fiber one I have here now (post coming next week most likely) has a much smaller profile.

i just purchased this case 2 months ago. the leather has split, which i did not expect from a 79.00 case. i am pretty concerned with replacements as when i showed them the pictures of the tear, they advised me that doesnt look like wear and tear??? what is a tear??? anyways they have brushed me off and told me to forget a replacement. i have mailed them back challenging them and await reply. so if you are to buy one wait for my reply first. you dont want to spend that kind of money and find that there replacement procedures are not professional enough.

    • Terry, we’ve used them for quite a bit of time, and like anything, they are prone to normal wear and tear….especially on something like a cell phone case that you use every day. How did the leather split and where? I would typically side with Ion unless it’s an actual defect in the case…but if it was something where the case/phone was dropped a bunch of times and leather split, I don’t think that’s normal for a company to replace it in those instances.

The case was not dropped or anything like that. In addition I have had it less then 2 months so there couldn’t be that much wear and tear. The leather has split from the side. For what it’s worth they should have replaced it. And still I’ve had no reply from there service dept. I would like to make it completely clear that if I had the case for several months I wouldn’t be complaining. This case was shipped from china I would guess that the cost of the actual case isn’t very much so for what I paid they could have replaced 3 times over. I’m sorry dave I sell products everyday, I have a annual turnover of over 1 million and yes I do sometimes have complaints regarding a product, which I assess and 9/10 I replace. 2months is not enough time for the product to malfunction. And in this instance I would consider the fact that the customer hadn’t had the case for very long, so this defect shouldn’t have happened hence replace it.

        • I understand, no response is unacceptable, that wouldn’t happen if you bought from us.

Though it shouldn’t come up like that after just 2 months unless it somehow got pried up accidentally, you can try gluing the edge back down (if it’s what I’m thinking), sounds like a very easy fix.
