APR Performance was commissioned by Formula D (Drifting championship) to produce the trophies for the 2009 race season.  No longer are they your standard trophies, but instead made completely out of carbon fiber:

Trophies will be awarded at event round this year, so the first one should have been given away this past weekend in Long Beach, CA.  We’ll add to this post as more pictures of the trophies show up.

Update 4/30/09: APR let us know that the original photos that were posted were taken prior to the coating process.  Here’s a couple of new images for you guys to gawk over:

  • A really nice idea……a shame about the shape, I think that should have been “modernized” as well.
    Nice work though.

  • Agreed, I too would have liked to see a more modernized shape. It’s funny though because we had gone through some of the steps of developing a carbon fiber trophy ourselves, and we can definitely appreciate the time/cost behind these.

  • Hi guys. I checked out my buddies trophy this weekend at Long beach. I was actually surprized at how well made they are. My Masters is in composites, so I was scrutinizing them pretty well. They did a nice job hiding the seams and actually had to add metal to it becasue they thought it was too light. Good work APR.

  • Thanks Peter, we’ve gone ahead and updated the article to include the new pictures!

If you guys have a Flickr account, make sure to add them to our carbon fiber group:

If not, let me know if we’d have permission to post them to our account to share with our readers on Flickr.

  • Dave,
You have our permission to post them to your account.
    Thanks,
    Peter.
