Say hello to our little friend, the 85 Carbonlight, a lighter than lightweight hunting rifle that’s the smallest of its kind, weight-wise, thanks to a one-of-a-kind carbon fiber stock.

Designed by Sako, and built from the same CFRP technology that has become the hallmark of car, airplane and shuttle construction, the 85 Carbonlight is a true blue carbon fiber composition – and a far cry from the many dipped duplicates out there whose hilts and handles mimic and mock carbon fiber’s high-end design for the sake of style.

Two pounds lighter than its Sako sister, the medium-sized 85 Classic, the Carbonlight weighs in at an awesomely underwhelming 5.5 pounds, sans scope, which is pretty amazing when you consider that the only other alterations made were to a set of nonessential iron sights, which have become optional, and to a steel trigger guard, which was replaced by carbon fiber’s good friend, aluminum alloy.

In addition to its slimmer stock, it’s also able to claim a soft-touch surface, a sleek palm swell and a super-smooth cheek piece, all because of carbon fiber.

Available in six sizes, each to accommodate an array of calibers, the 85 Carbonlight also includes a meticulously, machine-constructed barrel that’s cold-hammer forged before intense inspection and Sako’s very own two-way safety that allows you to lock the trigger and bolt handle separately and load and reload while the safety is still engaged.

Other notable characteristics include a controlled cartridge feed for easy firing, a total control latch for accidental magazine release prevention and multiple trigger options.

Priced at $3,000, it definitely resides on the higher end of the rifle range. But, because of its lighter weight and advanced durability, it appears to be an invaluable addition for any long-haul hunter who prefers to pack light and shoot from long range.
