Carbon fiber is no stranger to furniture. More and more designers are starting to incorporate this high-end material into their work, and for good reason too; It looks great and it keeps the weight down. And young British designer Jules Sturgess is no exception.

Influenced greatly by automotive design, Jules Sturgess has launched a luxury line of carbon fiber furniture. Hand crafted and in a limited edition, Sturgess has produced multiple pieces but our main focus will be on a chair called the Marea.

The Marea was the first piece of the collection to be created and is inspired by the human form. Because of the dynamic fit, the reclined position adheres to the body perfectly, eliminating the need for any type of padding. It is handmade from twenty two layers of three different weaves of carbon fiber prepreg cloth, over the course of several weeks. It weighs just 17 kg (about 37.5 pounds) and looks nearly invisible when looking at it from the side. It kind of reminds me of the Kedo X-1 Lounge Chair we sell, because of its modern and functional look.

The Marea is no regular lounge chair, as it retails for a hefty 14,999 euro (about $19,600 at the time of this writing). Both the color and the finish are able to be customized per order, which will be added on top of its carbon surface. The trim materials are fabricated from high quality Alcantara and Connolly leather, and can also be customized to any color choice. A mere 100 chairs are being made and each will have the build number of the chair engraved in it.

The combination of advanced materials, design and the world of racing, has allowed for this masterpiece. Noting once again, each piece is hand crafted which definitely helps explain the high price tag.
