It seems like these days, Audi cant get enough of carbon fiber. Recently we wrote about their e-bike prototype that incorporates a full carbon fiber frame and now they are involved with the carbon fiber chair pictured below.

R18 Ultra carbon fiber chair prototype

Audi, along with German designers Kram/Weisshaar, have created the carbon fiber and aluminum R18 Ultra Chair for public testing before the final design is presented. The prototype was made available for public testing during the Milan Furniture Fair back in April of 2012.

The reason for all their data collection, is that this prototype chair is connected to hundreds of stress analysis monitors on the seat, back and legs. Each time a person sat down on the chair, a heat map appears and the monitors record the data regarding stress levels on the chair, with a custom algorithm that identifies the most structurally efficient version of the chair with the main goal of light-weight construction.

The final design will be revealed at Design Miami/ in December 2012.
